Hypertension has become one of the major problems in Malaysia and other countries in the world due to increasing incidence of the disease. The prevalence of hypertension in Malaysia has increased tremendously. The increase in prevalence of hypertension can be due to the risk factors such as awareness and coping lifestyle. This condition can be caused by different factors such as environmental factors or as a risk of previously occurring disease and it is a major risk factor of cardiovascular disease with high morbidity and mortality. This study was performed with the aim of assessing the prevalence, level of awareness and associated risk factors of hypertension among the lecturers of Management and Science University. A cross sectional study was carried out among the lecturers of MSU by using validated questionnaire. Probability sampling- simple random sampling was the method used in this study. A sample of 128 participants took part in this study. In this study, 31.7 % of respondents were found to be hypertensive, that is, 40 out of 128 respondents have high blood pressure; whereas 68.3 % of the respondents were not (86 out of 128 lecturers). The findings of this study revealed that the level of knowledge of hypertension among the respondents was average. Participants with positive behavioral factors, good health conditions and proper predisposing, enabling and reinforcing factors have lower risk to be hypertensive. The study has shown that there is significant association between hypertension and associated risk factors such as high sodium consumption, no physical activity, smoking, alcohol consumption, high BMI, medical history of diabetes and cholesterol, family history (hypertension, diabetes, stroke and heart disease), low/no knowledge of hypertension, perception about hypertension, health information accessibility, health promotion program participation and social support- therefore, higher risk to be hypertensive. From this study; it is known that it is vital to have a balanced and healthy lifestyle so as to avoid the risk factors of hypertension as much as possible. Availability of resources, self-care campaign, and health promotion programs should be integrated. Good support and control has been noted to decrease the odds to have hypertension.
